About This EU Investment Fund Directory

This directory provides access to the European Central Bank's official list of investment funds (IFs) operating in the euro area. The data is published monthly under Regulation (EU) 2024/1988 and covers the actual IF reporting population across 19 EU member states.

Each record includes the fund's Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) where available, investment policy classification, UCITS/AIF compliance status, net asset value size class, and the managing company's details. You can click through to any fund or manager's full LEI details page for ownership hierarchies and registration history.

Why Investment Funds Need an LEI Code

A Legal Entity Identifier, commonly referred to as an LEI number or LEI code, is a 20-character alphanumeric reference that uniquely identifies a legal entity participating in financial transactions. For EU investment funds, holding a valid LEI is not optional. Multiple regulatory frameworks mandate that funds obtain and maintain their LEI registration to ensure transparency in cross-border reporting and counterparty identification.

    EU Regulations Requiring Fund LEIs

    UCITS Directive (2009/65/EC)

The Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities (UCITS) directive governs the majority of retail investment funds in Europe. National competent authorities require UCITS funds to hold an active LEI code for regulatory filings, prospectus disclosures, and cross-border passporting under the directive's harmonised framework.

    AIFMD (2011/61/EU)

The Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive requires that alternative investment funds (AIFs), including hedge funds, private equity vehicles, and real estate funds, are identified by their LEI number in all regulatory reporting submitted to ESMA and national authorities. AIFMD Annex IV reporting explicitly uses the LEI as the primary entity identifier.

    EMIR (EU 648/2012)

The European Market Infrastructure Regulation mandates that all counterparties to derivative contracts, including investment funds, report their trades to authorised trade repositories using a valid Legal Entity Identifier. Without a current LEI, funds cannot fulfil their EMIR reporting obligations, potentially resulting in regulatory sanctions.

    MiFID II / MiFIR (2014/65/EU)

Under the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive and its accompanying regulation, investment firms must identify fund clients using their LEI code in transaction reports submitted to national competent authorities. A fund that lacks a valid LEI may be unable to execute trades through MiFID-regulated venues.

    SFDR (EU 2019/2088)

The Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation requires fund managers to report sustainability-related disclosures at both entity and product level. The LEI number is used as the standard identifier in SFDR reporting templates, linking ESG disclosures to specific fund entities across EU regulatory databases.

    ECB Statistical Reporting

The European Central Bank's statistical framework, including the regulation governing this directory's data, uses LEIs as the core reference for identifying investment funds. Funds that appear in this directory without an LEI code may face delays in ECB data reconciliation and cross-referencing with GLEIF records.
